Tengwang Pavilion Jiangxi China Travel Guide And Tips

The Tengwang Pavilion (Tengwang Ge) is at the south side of Yanjiang Bei Road and Dieshan Road. In the ancient times it was one of the four famous towers in China (the other three are Yellow Crown Tower in Wuhan, Yueyang Pavilion in Yueyang and Penglaige Tower in Yantai).
Normally speaking, Nanchang enjoys a warm climate and abounds in rainfall. But in summer, the weather is hot and humid due to its basin location. The city is listed among one of the four hottest cities in China, together with Nanjing, Chongqing and Wuhan, the so-called “Four Furnaces”.

The tower was constructed in Tang Dynasty (653 AD). And it was at that time the mansion of the prince of Tang royal family. The pavilion was 9-floor with the height of 57.5 meters. And now the building we have seen was rebuilt in Song dynasty. There was a famous poem to describe the beauty of the tower. The pavilion is facing the Xi Mountains, and people can see a whole view of Nanchang city.
The reputation of Tengwang Pavilion, to a great extent, is due to a well-known prose – “Preface to Tengwang Pavilion” by Wangbo. It was said that when the author, a reputable poet of the Tang, passed Nanchang on his way to Guangdong, he wrote this prose on the subject of the banquet which was being held to celebrate the reconstruction.
